American president, Barack Obama, announced this Thursday that his administration has done more for the security of Israel than any other president before him. "It is obvious that we don't have a more important ally than the state of Israel", announced Obama to potential donors to his pre-electoral campaign in the house of Jack Rosen, who is the chairman of the American Jewish congress.
"I'm not trying to pat myself too much on the shoulder, but the current government has done more for the State of Israel than any other government", Obama pointed out. "We don't want any compromises, when the security of Israel is at stake… and this will be the case in the future as well."
"be it the effectiveness of the collaboration between our intelligence forces, or developing 'Iron Dome' to prevent rockets from falling in Tel Aviv, we are committed to the security of Israel", he said.
Rosen, in response to the president's words remarked: "It would be irresponsible from me not to mention that many members of the Jewish community are worried about the relationship between Israel and the United States. Yet we must acknowledge that no American government has ever supported Israel the way the Obama administration has done".
The White House wants to secure the support of the Jewish votes in 2012 elections in which Obama intends to run for a second candidacy. In 2008 he received 8 out of every 10 Jewish votes. Yet his reelection is jeopardized by political debates in states like Florida and Pennsylvania.
Obama has encountered criticism from some Jewish leaders in the beginning of this year for his demand that any negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians be based on the 1967 borders, and his peace initiatives to achieve peace in the region has come to a dead end. But Obama has gained some points from Israel and its supporters for his strong opposition to the Palestinian unilateral initiative for statehood recognition by the United Nations. He has also gained points for his strong line against the Iranian Nuclear plan.
The phrase "we don't have a more important ally than the state of Israel" has gained Obama $300,000 dollars for his electoral campaign from rich Jewish sponsors.
