The city was once home to one of the world’s oldest Jewish communities and its main Synagogue dates back over 1,500 years, making it the oldest functioning Jewish place of worship until just two decades ago when the last Jews left following the creation of Israel.

While there have been multiple reports documenting the damage inflicted on Syria’s oldest city, there has been no news on the fate of the Great Synagogue, which sits in Aleppo’s historic centre, an area which has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
