EL Al airline to drop Tel Aviv-Cairo route

Israel’s national airline El Al plans to end its weekly flight from Tel Aviv to Cairo for the first time in more than three decades.

The airline says the flights, which require a number of security measures, are too costly, and that there isn’t enough demand to justify keeping the route going.
 
The number of passengers travelling between Israel and Egypt has dropped significantly since Egypt’s revolution last year, prompting El Al to reduce its service to a bare minimum, meaning a number of Egyptian visitors to historic sites in the Jewish State are also likely to go down.
 
An Israeli official said maintaining the flight has diplomatic importance, but the airline says it would need significant financial support from the government to keep the route in service.
