Leon Freifeld was viciously attacked and murdered near his home on Saturday morning. Some reports out of Israel suggest there may have been three assailants, all of whom were former students of the deceased and who had been expelled from university due to poor grades.

What is known is that one man, a 26-year old Arab, who was heavily drunk, was arrested by police. Freifeld died at the scene of the attack. A criminal case has been opened under the article "premeditated murder". Leon Freifeld was head of the orthopedic department at a hospital in Lviv and an injuries specialist and respected academic. Freifeld’s brother, Vadim, who is a lecturer at Ben-Gurion University in Israel, has flown to Ukraine. Lviv was a centre of Jewish life before World War II.
