As countries across Europe prepare for International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday, Jan. 27, European Parliament President Martin Schulz, speaking at EU headquarters in Brussels on Thursday, said, "I feel that I have a very specific responsibility because what was decided at the so-called Wannsee Conference - the extermination of the Jewish people - was done in the name of the German people." 

The newly elected President of the European Parliament, German Martin Schulz, paid tribute to the memory of the six millions Jews who were killed in the Holocaust, during a special ceremony at the seat of the EU institution in Brussels.

Yad Vashem in Jerusalem will open a new exhibition, "Last Portrait:  Painting for Posterity," on January 23 to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27 January).

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which commemorates every year the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp (27 January 1945), will be marked next Tuesday in the European Parliament in Brussels during a special event.
